明日から真夏日だそうです。
蝉が鳴き始めました。



でも今日は夏である以前に土曜日だからこの曲を。

「英語分かりません。
楽譜読めません。

みたいなコメントがあった。
私もこの歌きいてるとなんか泣けます。
明るい曲調なのに。


でもやっぱり歌詞読んだらさらに泣ける。

歌詞を読んだら分かるんだけど、
このPVはとても忠実に歌詞を再現してる。

思い出に浸る老紳士、
夢をあきらめられないバーテンダー、
恋をしない小説家、
生涯水兵の男、
孤独を抱えたビジネスマン、
そんな人たちがほんの一時、いろんなことを忘れるために
ピアノマンの歌を聴きにくる。
そんな話を歌った歌。


泣けるね。


でもね、もっと泣けるのはここからの話。


この曲は実話をもとにかかれたんだよね。

ビリー・ジョエルといえば今でも有名な歌手だけど
デビューしたての頃はちっとも売れなかった。
生活に困り果てた彼は、ロスのピアノバーで
ピアノを弾いて、歌って、なんとか食いつないでた。
当時は酷い鬱状態に陥ってたらしい。

そんなときのことを歌った曲なんだって。
(歌詞に出てくる「ビル」っていうのはピアノバーで彼が実際に使ってたネームらしい。)


最後の方に、

人々はチップをくれてはこういう
「お兄さん、ここで一体何をしているんだい？」

て歌詞があるんだけど
それはほんとはビリー・ジョエルのこころの叫びだったのかもしれない。
自分はここでなにしてるんだろって。
だって「何をしているんだい？」って、
ピアノ弾いてるに決まってるじゃないか。
何をしてるのか分からなかったのは本人だ。とおもう。


そんな苦難を悟らせないほど明るいワルツなのにね。
でも彼の苦しみや諦めやその中にある暖かさみたいなのが伝わるから
この曲はなんも知らない人でも泣けちゃうのかもね。


多分、彼は、いろんな人を救ってたことで救われてたんだと思う。
自分の曲を聴いていろんなことを忘れる人、思い出す人、
そんな人たちがいたから逆に救われてたんじゃないかな。
ピアノを弾くのをやめないでいられたんじゃないかな。
「どっか冷めた感じで客を見ながら、
それでもあったかい目で笑ってる若い頃のビリージョエルが目に浮かぶ。」
って誰かがyoutubeのコメント欄に書いてたなぁ。
